Luxury cars are created for comfort, performance, and safety. Data compiled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing motor vehicle-related deaths, injuries and accidents, indicates luxury cars are some of the best to own if you’re in a serious accident. The likelihood you’ll walk away uninjured is that much greater.
To ensure safety and crashworthiness, a vehicle is generally put through six standard tests:
- Frontal crash test
- Side crash test
- Driver-side small overlap frontal test
- Passenger-side small overlap frontal test
- Roof strength test
- Head restraints & seats test
There is a complex scoring system which we won’t get into here, but the result is a very comprehensive measure of how each vehicle does.
We have analyzed some of Vancouver’s best luxury vehicles and have come up with our top three in overall safety.
BMW 5 Series
The new BMW 5 has made leaps and bounds over previous generations; specifically, it has improved in protection in the front crash test. Overall, the BMW 5 Series scored extremely well in all categories and won a TOP SAFETY PICK + award.
In the low-speed test, the driver space was maintained to ensure the driver wouldn’t likely sustain any major injuries. Airbags and the seat belt worked well during the crash to control the driver’s movement and sensors indicated the driver was at low risk of any significant injuries.
Mercedes-Benz E-class sedan
The E-class Sedan scored high in the top categories of all the crash safety tests. It is a truly superbly crafted vehicle with many state-of-the-art safety features. For example, the world class stability control automatically senses when the vehicles has reached its handling limits and automate reduces the engine power or applies select brakes to help prevent the driver from losing control of the vehicle.
Another popular feature is the automated tire sensor which modulates the brake pressure to allow the tire to rotate, preventing skidding and ultimate control for the driver.
The Acura RLX
This luxury Sedan is improving the driving experience across all levels. Just like the E-class Mercedes, the RLX ha many driver-assisted features that give drivers more control and ensures a high standard of safety.
Probably the most sophisticated feature is the Heads-up Warning display, complete with collision mitigation braking system. This system works with a radar transmitter in the grill of the RLX which can detect vehicles or objects directly ahead and determine distance and speed. If a vehicle or object is detected, a head-up warning will be issued as well as light braking.
During the crash safety tests, the body structure of the RLX absorbed and distributed crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, keeping everyone inside safer.
